Quick Facts
- Who: Sadie, a gentle Collie cross — dubbed “Britain’s loneliest dog”
- Rescued from: A large-scale hoarding home with around 200 dogs, living in unsuitable outdoor compounds
- The wait: Nearly three years in RSPCA kennels — close to 1,000 days of watching other dogs come and go
- The breakthrough: Kennel staff posted a video of her on TikTok every single day — on day 83, the right person finally saw her
- The happy ending: Adopted by Mabel Edge, 51, and her partner Al in Westward Ho!, Devon
She had watched hundreds of other dogs leave the kennels for new lives. Every single one went home. Sadie never did.
For nearly three years, the gentle Collie cross waited behind a kennel door in Sussex — first with the RSPCA’s Cornwall branch, then with RSPCA Brighton & Heart of Sussex in Patcham — while dog after dog was chosen and she was passed over, again and again. The staff called her Britain’s loneliest dog. And as she approached 1,000 days in kennels, they decided they had to try something desperate: they would make her a TikTok star.
It took 83 videos. But on day 83, everything changed.
A Dog Who Never Got Chosen
Sadie’s story began in one of the worst places imaginable. She was rescued by the RSPCA from a large-scale hoarding situation — a home where around 200 dogs were living in unsuitable conditions, confined to outdoor compounds with almost no socialisation. For a dog like Sadie, the ordinary world of people was a frightening and unfamiliar place.
She was first put up for rehoming at the RSPCA’s Cornwall branch in September 2023, but legal processes meant she could not be rehomed straight away. By April 2024, she had moved to the Brighton & Heart of Sussex branch in Patcham — and there, her long wait truly began.
Even after the legal hold lifted, Sadie needed something more valuable than time: a slow, careful recovery and rehabilitation journey, learning how to trust people and how to live in a normal home. And while she was healing, the world kept walking past her kennel door.
One Thousand Days of Watching

Kennel life is hard on every dog. But for Sadie, it stretched into something almost unbearable: year after year of watching hundreds of other dogs arrive, get chosen, and leave for their new families — while she stayed behind.
The staff at the Brighton branch knew exactly what she needed: a calm, patient home with people who understood nervous rescue dogs. But finding that perfect match takes time, and Sadie is a dog who cannot simply be handed to anyone. As the days piled up — 500, 700, 900 — and the 1,000-day mark came into view, they decided a normal rehoming appeal was no longer enough.
If nobody was coming to the kennels to find Sadie, then the kennels would have to find everybody else.
The TikTok Mission
So the staff launched a mission with a beautifully simple plan: post a video of Sadie on TikTok every single day until she found her home.
It was a bold, daily labour of love. Each clip was a small window into the real Sadie — the sweet, gentle dog that a photograph in a kennel listing could never capture. And the internet, as it always does with a good dog, started to watch. People checked back each morning to see what Sadie had been up to. She was becoming, slowly, the star she was meant to be.
The videos accumulated. Day 10, day 30, day 50. Still no match. Day 80. The staff kept posting anyway, because they had promised Sadie they would not give up on her. And then, on day 83, the algorithm finally did its magic: the right person saw her.
Day 83

Mabel Edge, 51, from Westward Ho! in Devon, had not even been looking for a dog. A colleague had shared one of Sadie’s TikTok videos with her — and Mabel found herself checking back every day, following the little campaign.
She was struck, she said, by how sweet Sadie seemed on screen — and she could not believe the dog had been waiting for a home for so long. Her partner Al listened, and then said the words that changed everything: well, why don’t we go and look at her?
The couple were not strangers to rescue life — they had sadly lost their own rescue dog the year before, and they understood exactly what a dog like Sadie needs. Their rural home in Devon was calm, patient and quiet: the perfect match the kennel staff had been holding out for all along.
They drove to see her. And Sadie, Britain’s loneliest dog, finally had someone walking through the door — for her.
The Home She Was Waiting For
Sometimes the long wait is not a failure. It is the story protecting the ending.
Sadie’s nearly three years in kennels were never wasted. They kept her safe while she healed, while the legal processes played out, while she slowly became the dog a family could love. And when that family finally appeared, it was the right one: people with rescue-dog experience, a calm rural home, and all the patience a dog like Sadie deserves.
No more kennel door. No more watching other dogs leave. The TikTok campaign is over, the videos can stop — because Britain’s loneliest dog is not lonely anymore.

Why This Story Matters
Stories like Sadie’s travel fast because they are secretly about all of us. We have all, at some point, been the one watching everyone else get chosen. We know what it feels like to wait while the world moves on without us.
But Sadie’s story is also about what happens on the other side of the wait: the staff who refused to give up on her, the 83 TikTok videos posted one by one on faith, the colleague who pressed share, and the woman who saw a lonely dog on her phone and thought — that one. That one is ours.
Kindness, it turns out, is patient. And sometimes, on day 83, it finally arrives.
